Never mind, I figured it out.
I plugged in the highest values I dared in init.ora, and Oracle =
informed me
that the max values are 128 and 5. We had 128 and 4 buffers.
I changed it to 5, but that won't speed up ARCH by very much.
Oracle8i with up to 5 archivers sounds much better, I wonder if it =
really is
faster.

I am importing a database that is in archivelog mode, and in my opinion this is taking WAY too long (over 24 hours). This is a digital alpha, Digital UX 4.0D, Oracle 7.3. Log_archive_buffer_size =3D 128 Log_archive_buffers =3D 4. I strongly suspect that ARCH is the bottleneck, the two CPUs are not 100% busy and neither is the RAID system. As usual Oracle doesn't mention in the manuals what the maximum values are for these parameters on D-UX, but Alomari's book mentions that a balance has to be reached between the speed of ARCH and the rest of the background processes. (p.204). Once the import has finished I would like to set these parameters appropriately. What parameters have worked for you? I am thinking of multiplying these values by 4, 8 or even more, if there is no detrimental effect. We don't have an equivalent test server, it's always mentioned as a "possibility" or as "a good idea", but never gets done so I don't think it's a priority here. I wish I had one, I could try different values!
