There's a whole section on how to size the buckets on metalink. It was too complicated for me to paraphrase. Maybe someone else can.

The default is 75.

You don't want to use too few because that sort of defeats the purpose. If you specify too many, it'll automatically decrease the number of buckets to the max number of discrete possible values. Then you'll have one bucket per discrete allowable value.

I've been using the default and that seems to working pretty well. I have hundreds of discrete values.
