I've found with 8i, that you can't do anything with Oracle databases without
going through the listener. They always have to be up and running (which
isn't difficult because that's usually down through the Services in NT).
Plus you have to be on a network, a network card installed and configured,
etc. I have no idea how to bypass the listener on NT like you do with
ORACLE_SID on Unix.
What I think you problem is, is that you aren't connected to a LAN. Try
pluging in a network cable and see if that helps.
HTH Does anybody out there know how to do what I'm talking about with a local database and svrmgr80.exe?
Thanks,
Lyall Barbour

Subject: URGENT help - TNS error
Hello lists,
I am getting the following error while trying to login through sql*plus or while starting svrmgrl.
TNS-12560 TNS:protocol adapter error
Cause: A generic protocol adapter error occurred.
Action: Check addresses used for proper protocol specification. Before reporting this error, look at the error stack and check for lower level transport errors. For further details, turn on tracing and re-execute the operation. Turn off tracing when the operation is complete.
I just installed and created an Oracle8i database on NT4.0 with Smart Array 3200 (Compaq).
Any help would be highly appreciated..
