Hot Backups...am I off base??When I first read this, I thought your co = worker was deranged...Then I reread your message, and realised that the = system backup would contain your hotbackup files. You state that there = is plenty of space on disk for both the system and hot backup files. It = made me wonder how many backup sets you would have access to. If it is = just one, then I would not feel comfortable with the described scenario. = I feel comfortable with my backup/recovery options only if I have = access to multiple backup sets for a database e.g. Daily backups for the = previous week or two. I would also point out that I would have tested a = number of recovery situations using those backups, so that I am = cofortable that the backup process is getting all the required files
Try for a compromise. He can delete your hotbackup if he copies it to = it's own tape first. Then you can be satisfied that you have something = to fall back on, and he can keep house all he wants. If anyone balks at = the cost of a dozen or so tapes to accomplish this, make them aware that = this is a pretty cost effective redundancy, and ANY dataloss would cost = much much more. =20

I am writing Korn shell scripts to create nightly hot backups on UNIX = (SUN Solaris.)=20
Another "DBA" (ex-System Admin I might add) recommends 1. making a hot = backup of the database, 2. make a system backup, 3. then DELETE the hot = backup we just created relying only on the system backup with a verify = option. He say this is good for housekeeping on the system.
I highly opposed this scenario. There is plenty of space available on = the system for the backup files so that is not an issue. I'd rather have = both.. the system backup and the hot backup on disk drives.
Am I off my rocker not to rely solely on the system backup?=20
Would any of you use this strategy in production???=20
Thanks in advance!=20
