I am assuming that you are using some version Oracle 8/8i, which is the version that the control file had become considerably larger. If you are worried about the size of your control file you aren't left with too many choices. What is your configuration of your control file, execute in svrmgrl the following command:
"alter database backup controlfile to trace", this will output a trace file with a script to recreate your controlfile. Send that back in an email, also do you use RMAN, or are you in archive log mode? (type: "archive log list" in svrmgrl ).
