Jared,

Never been to Kings Canyon, although my Brother-in-law has talked about it. We usually stayed away from the valley also, but I remember one of the best trips we took was from out of the valley up the "mist trail" (Vernal Falls? Can't remember which waterfall, but the trail went almost right thru it). Thought I was in a scene from "Lord of the Rings".

Wish there was something similar close to Chicago. Now all I see is buildings or cron fields! Oh well, maybe this summer if I get back out to Cal.

Bob,

Been to Yosemite many times. We used to live in Fresno, CA, which is pretty close to Yosemite.

We tried to avoid the valley during tourist season, as it was like downtown SF during the weekend.

Many *great* places in the backcountry, and you don't need to go through the valley to get to many of them.

We actually preferred Kings Canyon National Park. Just south of Yosemite, very beautiful and *far* less crowded.
