Bob,
Been to Yosemite many times. We used to live in Fresno, CA, which is pretty close to Yosemite.
We tried to avoid the valley during tourist season, as it was like downtown SF during the weekend.
Many *great* places in the backcountry, and you don't need to go through the valley to get to many of them.
We actually preferred Kings Canyon National Park. Just south of Yosemite, very beautiful and *far* less crowded.
