Hi all,

Is it advisable to back-up control files to tape?

My backup strategy involves daily RMAN backups, including auto-backup of the control file. In addition I have one control file written to tape.

Is this advisable? Last night there was a locking issue between the database and the tape archiver (a 1 in a million chance I reckon, but it happened) which brought the database down entirely.

The answer seems obvious to me: don't write the control file to tape. But I (and others I am sure) would appreciate opinions from the more learned Oracle users around.

Thanks!

Don't directly backup the control file to tape, backup it first to disk using alter database backup controlfile and then backup the copy to tape.

Is configuring RMAN to autobackup the control file (and spfile) sufficient or should I be explicitly backing up the control file also?

Thanks

It is theorically sufficient but as controlfile is a key component, it is better to backup it twice in different ways.

Is there any difference between manual controlfile backup and automatic controlfile backup?

The way I suggest it, there is no relation at all.
"My" way does not use RMAN.
You could also use manual RMAN backup of control file, it is a third way.
