i have oracle reports and forms in my system and also oracle database.now problem is i am not able to work on oracle database.Is it due to d2k developer 2000 or any other problem i am not able to understand.how to make my oracle database work again?when i am trying to open oracle DB its giving error as oracle initialisation or shutdown in process(error number 01033.oracle version is 8.0.

Oracle 8??
Why do you hate 9i and 10g?
Connect as sysdba from sqlpus promt.
conn /as sysdba
issue :
startup

1. first check database status.
connect with sys user.
select status from v$instance;

IF mount, nomount then first shutdown database then startup.

connect with sys user.
SQL>shutdown immdiate;
....
SQL>startup

when the error is oracle initialisation or shutdown in process
i doubt if any select statement would work?

yes sys user can connect.
sqlplus /no log
conn / as sysdba
