hi,
i need to know if opatch utility is same as downloading the oracle patch from metalink and then applying the patch on database. In what case i have to run this opatch utility?

You have to use opatch to:
- apply a patch
- roll back/remove a patch
- list installed patches.

in patch set readme.txt file you can find out which opatch utility you need to use.

and for exisiting opatch utility you can find through "opatch lsinventory" command.

D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Db_1\OPatch>set oracle_home=d:\oracle\product\10.1.0\db
_1

D:\oracle\product\10.1.0\Db_1\OPatch>opatch lsinventory

Oracle Interim Patch Installer version 1.0.0.0.53
Copyright (c) 2005 Oracle Corporation. All Rights Reserved..
