You do NOT need the password if you log directly on to the DB server a user Oracle.
entering the 2 following line should get you logged in as "sys"
sqlplus
/ as sysdba

What is your oracle version.
if <=10g then you should change your sys password becuase default password is "change_on_install" and oracle also recommeneded to change sys password.

as Ana said, you can directly connect to sys without password.
but you also change and configure sys password for security purpose.

The user who has dba privilege can do the thing.
