A user has 4 Oracle 8i instances/databases and wants to upgrade to 11g RAC running on Redhat Linux. Question is: would 10g RAC be a better choice for their production system? Current architecture is: RAC1-4 each on a separate DL580G4 w/8G RAM and 4x Dual-Core 3.40Ghz CPU. There will also be separate Windows 2003 Std Ed. Servers for the front-end.

I'm thinking 10g would be a better choice than 11g for two reasons: (1) upgrade path unsupported/non-existent; (2) 10g offers greater stability. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike

How one can say that 10g provides greater/lower stability that 11g when 11g has been released for only few weeks?

Currently go to 10gR2, just because 11g has only few weeks and you already know what are the bugs (check Metalink).
And test 11g to upgrade in a year after the first patchset(s) was/were released.

Michel

Thanks, Michel! My recommendation will be 10gR2. Know the best place (besides Metalink) for Hardware/Software requirements for a 10gRAC system?
