Hi,

I have oracle 7.3.

when I try to add a data file i have this error:

ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01118: cannot add any more database files: limit of 30 exceeded


In my init.ora I changed the parameter:

db_files = 31

I have the same error.

Have you bounced the database after changing the parameter?

Number of datafiles is limited by:
- db_files
- maxdatafiles given at database creation time.

The second one cannot be modified without recreating the control file.

This thread is not related with main one. I have not experience on oracle7. I think data file max size is OS dependent.

I have this error:

ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01237: cannot extend datafile 15
ORA-01110: data file 15: '/data3/mmp01pup2.dbf'
ORA-09972: sfsfs: unable to resize a file smaller
IBM AIX RISC System/6000 Error: 27: File too large
Additional information: 512000
Additional information: 4096

No.

It's due to OS and/or file system restrictions on file size.

The file size restrictions of your OS and file system.

- Check ulimit
- Change file system options (maybe recreate it)
- Change file system type
- Change OS

OP After solved this problem please think for upgrade...
now 11g is also released.
you know where you are know ?

when I startup my oracle instance I have this error:

ORA-00059: maximum number of DB_FILES exceeded

The db_files parameter has been set to 20

Set your db_files parameter to a greater value.
It was at 30 in your previous post, why did you decrease it?
