Hi!

The agent went down this weekend and refuses to start. I only get this when I try to start it:

***************************************************************
E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\agent10g\bin>emctl start agent
Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Release 3 Grid Control 10.2.0.3.0.
Copyright (c) 1996, 2007 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
The Oracleagent10gAgent service is starting.......
The Oracleagent10gAgent service could not be started.

A service specific error occurred: 2.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3547.
***************************************************************
The NET HELP does not provide anything.

Any ideas?

Platform: Windows 2003

Have you checked the log files? $AGENT_HOME/sysman/log/emagent.log?

Also, not sure about windows (AIX/Linux is my platform) but since the agent crashed maybe it is holding onto some processes/ports. Check in Services to make sure nothing is hanging around. Failing that try stopping the agent and then restarting it.

Last resort but have/can you reboot the server?

Does the problem still occur?

Well, there are a logfile called emagent_pearl.log. But nothing else. The last update in this file is from the 10th of October. So, nothing of use in there...

OK.

What about the services, did you try the stopping the agent / killing any agent services that may still be running?

Next I would suggest a server reboot.

Does it work now?

Try to reconfigure the agent:

$AGENT_HOME/bin/agentca -f

Check your error logs, anything new?

Still no luck, then raise an SR.

Have done a reboot, did not help. The agentca -f did not help.
I have raised a SR at metalink.

Because Im such a nice guy, I will post the solution here Smile
I got good help from Oracle support.
We are using RAC, by the way.

First of all I had to delete all files located in:

E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\agent10g\sestows47.prg-dc.dhl.com\sysman\emd\state
E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\agent10g\sestows47.prg-dc.dhl.com\sysman\emd\upload

and

E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\agent10g\sestows47.prg-dc.dhl.com\sysman\log

After that, I was able to start the agent using:

emctl start agent

The agent are up and running this morning, but here are some solutions from Metalink if the problem occurs again:

Solution:

Article-ID: Note 434218.1
Title: Metric Collection error-Instance Health Check
initialization failed GIM-00104 LEM-00031 LEM-00033

1. Check if you have any hc_<sid>.dat file
ls -al $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/hc*

2. Stop the Database

3. Move all the hc_<sid>.dat file to hc_<sid>.dat file to hc_<sid>.dat_sic

4. Start the database

5. Change directory to the AGENT_HOME/bin directory.
Execute $emctl upload
Execute $emctl reload

The Metric collection error and errors in the emagent.trc will be gone.

Other solution

Article-ID: Note 379423.1

Folder: ST.EM.V10.Metrics
Topic: Metrics - Generic
Title: How to edit or disable the Health Check Metric Collection
in Grid Control 10.2

(Update for record id(s): 109700133)

UPDATE
======
Other solution is to disable the Healthcheck Metric For All Targets In One Shot

1. Stop the Agent with "emctl stop agent"

2. Edit the file $AGENT_HOME/sysman/admin/default_collection/instance.xmlp and change the section

<CollectionItem NAME="health_check" UPLOAD="NO" COLLECT_WHEN_DOWN="TRUE">
...
</CollectionItem>

to
<!--
<CollectionItem NAME="health_check" UPLOAD="NO" COLLECT_WHEN_DOWN="TRUE">
...
</CollectionItem>
-->

3. Startup the agent with "emctl start agent"

RAC eh, well I am pleased you you solved your problem. I wouldn't have been able to help as your RAC Agent directories look different to non-RAC.

Though we do do something similar when issuing a clearstate.

Hi!

I have got the same problem.
Error reason is dbsnmp user in one of databases on this host has locked account (expired password).

Update password 'alter user dbsnmp identified ...'
After that EM agent started succesfully.
