Dear all!
The HP that I have to remove Oracle 8i and install Oracle 10g has not XWindows, just only text-mode base with the operating is Unix BE 10.10.
I removed Oracle 8i successfully but I could not install Oracle 10g, event with silent mode. It required X-Window.
Can I attempt to install?
Thank you!

Yeah! Thank you for your reply.

I have many DB servers which have NO monitor attached to them.
|
Before you had those DBs, how did you install them? Had you have got XWindow in the other Server machine?

I use ssh to connect to the system with X11 forwarding enabled.
|
Thank you for you way. Would you like to guide me by this way?

P.S.
This problem really has NOTHING to do with Oracle, but is System Admin 101 training/setup issue.
|
Would you like to send the System Admin at number 101 document?
Any way, wish the best to you!

@anacedent: Please answer me some questions which made me stress along 2 days:
- Must I install ASM?
- When running ./runInstaller, it displayed that I must set the temporary environment variables with ORACLE_BASE and ORACLE_HOME, do I set with flexible or fixed without ASM?
Some one tell me about the Exceed program which is a virtual XWindow. Have you test this program even?
Thank you!

Thank you anacedent!
I am sorry about the "ASM" which mean Automatic Storage Management.
For the first purpose of this server which is development DB. I think that I do not need to install Automatic Storage Management.
But I am not sure if the error can occur while installation progressing.
You have used the Exceed program, would you like to whisper about this for me? I have not have the Xwindow on HP-US.
Thank you

For the last 3+ years I've been using a commercial product call Secure CRT. It can be considered Telnet on steroids.
I use it to "ssh" from my desktop PC to any of my *nix servers while having X11 forwarding enabled. I log onto the server a user "oracle".
On your HP "man ssh" will describe the basic functionality.
If this was done properly, then
env | sort
will reveal the DISPLAY variable has been automagically created & points back to the PC.
After starting Exceed or similar software on the PC that will act as the X-Windows server, you should be able to proceed.
In the X-11 world the X-Server is where the keyboard & mouse are connected.
If/when everything is correct, from the *nix server you can enter the command
xclock
& the next you'll see a new window on the PC which shows an analog clock face with the system time of the *nix server.
Once xclock successfully runs, then you'll be able to start OUI.
Why hasn't the System Admin solve this problem for you?
Hope This Helps.

May I do a question?
Is there a way to install oracle without GUI?
When user launch ./runInstaller... it launches oracle java-based installer which is (window+java)_based installer system to interface with the user... isn't it? I always thought that window environment plus java were prerequisites to install oracle.
Thank you,

Basicly yes, but ...
- Java is present on the installation media, so you don't have to install it beforehand.
- The XWindow environment doesn't have to be on the server itself, you can connect with ssh/telnet from a remote workstation which has X installed, and use that X Server (Either a *nix box or MS Windows with Cygwin, Exceed or some other X server running)
