2 same Oracle SID on a same server having two versions of oracles. [message #250779]

HI folks,

Could you please tell me ,whether its possible to run two Oracle SID having same name one for Oracle 9.0.0.8 and one for 9.0.0.6. on the same unix machine.

Please let me know how to do that, and what would be the impact if we do so.

Yes, it's possible, but I wouldn't recommend it.

There isn't anything really special that is needed to actual do it, you just create a database in each ORACLE_HOME with the same SID.

Actually it depends on your OS.
On some it is possible, on others it not possible.
On some, you have to warp the standard creation of instance and so it is risky.

Thanks ebrian,

When the client will connect to respective e SID, what setting they have to do in their tnsnames.ora file. Since both sid are running on the same host.

Could you please help me out.

One option would be that you could create two listeners that listen on different ports, specifying the appropriate ORACLE_HOME when configuring the SID_LIST for the listener. Therefore, the tnsnames file would have the appropriate port specified for connection.
