Hello,

We have one production machine here ( Oracle 9.2.0.8 / AIX 5.3 ) where we make an automated OS level flashcopy onto a test machine regularly. ( Not only the DB needs to be a 1:1 copy of production, but other files and programs on the machine, too, so that's the easiest way to enshure that )

For that we shut down the database with "shutdown immediate".

Every now and then the shutdown fails with a "ORA-01013: user requested cancel of current operation" after one hour (normally it's down in a few seconds) because of some sessions seem to be hung and can't be disconnected.

According to this http://docs.huihoo.com/oracle/docs/B19306_01/server.102/b14231/start.htm#CIHDAGBD it seems to be a one-hour hardcoded timeout. Does anyone know a way to shorten that timeout? We would like to get on with the rest of the nightly jobs if the shutdown fails, and skip the copy onto test in that case.

Thomas

As you said it is hard-coded and so I don't think there is any way to change it.
