Hi all,

I am going to apply the CPU patch on a windows 2000 test server. The oracle version is 9.2.0.1 on the server.I have to test the CPU patch for 9.2.0.7. So I am thinking of applying the patch for 9.2.0.7. My question is do I have to upgrade the database from 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.7 to apply the CPU patch for 9.2.0.7 or I can just apply the patch 9.2.0.7 on the server and apply the CPU patch. I am very confused. Please help.

Well, it says apply the patch to an oracle database release 9.2.0.7. So I believe, I have to upgrade the database as well after applying the patch 9.2.0.7.

Full upgrade or patch upgrade, that depends on the patch, does it come with a complete install (like a full Oracle Home) or not.

1) Sometimes, you install a new Oracle home, and run an upgrade from there (for example, I did this when moving from 10.1.0.3 on Linux to 10.2.0.2)
2) Sometimes, it is as simple as running "opatch apply" after cd to the patch folder

But nn a patch upgrade, you usually work with the same Oracle Home. Usually the patch documentation readme's, help etc. from Oracle metalink keeps you moving around in circles, without giving a straight answer. So I suggest stick with the patch readme, and do what it says.

So make a backup of your entire Oracle_Home before you start. Doesn't hurt to backup your Registry, and of course your "C:\Program Files\Oracle" (the Oracle inventory).

Thanks for your response. In my case I cannot do the testing in the new oracle_home becuase there is no disk space available on the server and moreover I have been asked to apply the patch 9.2.0.7 on the 9.2.0.1 database and then do the testing.

On the CPU patch 9.2.0.7 README file, it says apply the patch on an oracle database release 9.2.0.7. I am still confused if I have to upgrade the database from 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.7(do I have to follow the upgradation process of the database) or just apply the patch 9.2.0.7 in the Oracle_home. Because in the readme of 9.2.0.7 patch, I just have to go cd and opatch apply. THe upgrade of the database will be a seperate document and a seperate process. Do I have to upgrade the database inorder to apply the CPU patch 9.2.0.7?

OS is windows 2003 32bit and oracle 9.2.0.1.

THanks very much

I think it is said in the readme file that you have to execute "opatch apply".

Yes,Michel. I know I have to execute 'opatch apply' for applying the patch 9.2.0.7. I think it will upgrade the oracle software alone and not the database. The database will still be 9.2.0.1.
So I have to upgrade the database to 9.2.0.7 after applying the patch 9.2.0.7. I couldnt find the document to upgrade the database to 9.2.0.7.

I will have to test the CPU patch on a 9.2.0.7 database.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Please if somebody have the link of the document to upgrade the database from 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.7 on windows 2003 please help..
Thanks.

Heres what you do,
-- Upgrade to 9.2.0.7 first: Read Note: 161549.1, read the table (matrix) will lead you to "Patch: 4163445", apply this patch. I also see a note from Taj as I write, saying the same thing.
-- And then apply that other patch that you want to apply

Hi,

I first applied patch 4163445 for 9.2.0.7 and then upgraded the database to 9.2.0.7 manually. Then applied the CPU patch 5907274.
There were no errors and everything went fine.
Thanks for your support.
