Does the flash recovery area store your actual backups or just information about it? I was reading the documentation and it wasn't really clear.

It contains your backups.

Flash recovery area stores your backup , then the flashback logs required for flashback feature.

So when we setup, let's say a cold backup, then we don't have to specify a default location? If we have the db_recovery... parameters setup? Correct?

Also, do we need to have a format set? Like, BACKUP FULL FORMAT "%d_FULL_%U" etc....

Hi,
If rman cold backup ( in mount stage) yes backup files created in flash_recovery_area location if flash recovery area configure.

you can set backup format for backup.
