Last time I checked, Oracle stated that it will continue to support Forms. It sees Forms as an important part of the Application Server. Since a lot of companies have invested in Forms applications I don't think Oracle will abandon IDS very soon.

I think it depends on what you mean by D2K.
Officially D2K stands for Developer 2000, the collection of Forms 4.5 and Reports 2.5 (and some other stuff practically no-one used; please no flames Wink)
Forms 4.5 is almost dead I'd say. But Forms 6/9/10 is very much alive; at least it is over here..

Even i have the same query....i heard oracle has totally stopped projects on forms 6i and reports6i....is it true??There are only few maintenance projects going on Forms and reports 6i..so how far is it reliable to be an D2K developer...do we have a future on D2k??All the projects running on D2K are being switched to Java/J2EE technology...Is it true??Post ur opinions

Oracle Developer suite 6i has been desupported for some time now (Oracle has even ceased the Extended Maintenance Support as of Jan 31th 2007), so has Oracle IDS 9i (Error correction support has ended, no more patches). Even IDS 10g has no longer Error correction support, but it will be supported up to December 31th 2009.

What I find disheartening about this 'new age' programming using Java and XML is that being completely ignorant concerning database design and performance has little impact on course exercises, PC based applications, and systems used by two or three people. However, more and more people are finding that the applications do NOT scale up to the corporate level. Only those projects where the database IS taken into consideration are scaling up. I am watching numerous new projects in separate organisations slipping on a daily basis. Six month Java/XML projects are now 18 months old and are still not rolled out because they do not scale.

Recent programming graduates have been fed a 'crock'. You can NOT create industrial grade applications without consideration of the database. When programming in Forms you are working in contact with the database. There are tools to build an API over the data definition and there are Application DBAs whose position is creating this interface layer between the user interface language and the database. Unfortunately, these newbies have been taught to believe that the DBAs are no longer required.

Well said, David.
While we're at it: <rant>is it just me, or has this whole everything-is-possible-if-you-use-java-and-xml created lazy designer/analysts?
More and more I see people that try to outcode Forms' built-ins. Rewrite Forms' query-mechanism, locking mechanism, master-detail etc.
Only the other day someone asked here he needed to insert records when a user pushed a button to exit his Form.
Why can't designers just stick with Forms' default behavior? Why don't developers stand up for that and question the design they are supposed to build?
