I am a newbie to Oracle. I am an original SQL DBA. Is there any way to migrate an Oracle 817 database to 10g R2? The only way I know of is to export and import. But can I take an offline backup and restore it? Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Your requirements are less than perfectly clear.
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238/toc.htm
The manual should provide the foundation of what you need, but only if you'll take the time to read & digest.
It depends upon many factors.
exp/imp is on possiblity; but a very poor choice.

You might want to check the official documentation for the options, pros and cons.
Exp/imp methods do work, but the reliability depends on the volume of data. And, Export / import works very good with just simple databases with plain data. If you have any of options installed better use the proper method.

Thanks for the reply. I have read this post before. But what I am do not want to upgrade my existing oracle instance. I have installed the 10g on a different server. Wanted to know what my best options are or migrating the database. I will continue reading the articles you posted to see if I can find my answer.

Thanks again.

Migration of a functioning clone is the BEST option.

still the same policies will apply.
Export/Import is easy if the volume is small.
Else,
Create a new 8i environment in new machine.
Copy the datafiles.
Mount the 8i database.
Install 10g.
Upgrade.
