Hi,
I have a database installed on a server. On this server I also wish to create an rman catalogue. The existing database is configured with ASM. Is the best policy to install oracle again into a new home for RMAN or create an RMAN schema in the existing database? I do not have access to another server for RMAN.

The best policy is to have RMAN catalog in another server. Smile

That could be disastrous. If you loose the target database, you loose the catalog.
Since you have no other server, you can just create a new database in same home.

Why do you need to use catalog option?
In most cases, just a controlfile backup (nocatalog mode) works just fine.

No.

As *mahesh* already suggested create New Database for recovery catalog with existing Oracle Home ( Oracle Software).
