What is the best/standard practice to create RMAN backup for DW environments.

RMAN image copy is better or compressed, because compressed is taking more time than backupset or image copy with multiple channels.

Which is best method on DW database size more than 1 TB

Is this a partitioned database?
RMAN incremental backup would do.
What version of oracle?
In 10g, make use of block change tracking.

Hi,
HyperBac http://www.hyperbac/oracle will allow you to do on-the-fly compression (and AES encryption) of RMAN Image Copy operations (with compression which is much faster than native RMAN compressed backupsets). This would reduce 1TB RMAN Image Copy files to 300GB or less. Will also cut the time required for these backup operations in half, worth checking out for yourself.

The results are below from my test db

Sr. No Database Size Option Channel Backup Size Compressed Time taken
1 165 G Oracle Suggested – full backup 1 165 G No 3 Hours 40 Minutes
2 165 G Full –Backup set 5 165 G No 1 hour 20 Minutes
3 165 G Customized 5 21 G yes 2 Hours 40 Minutes
4 165 G Customized – Image copy 5 165 G No 1 Hour 40 Minutes

size wise we are gaining but if you time is a constraint i dont think we are gaining much in fact it is more than normal backup window. 2 TB is my DB size, how can we reduce the backup window as well as disk usage.

Im using 10g rel 1 and soon we are upgrading to 10g Rel2 No partions used

Regards
Saravan.

I understand that AIX support for HyperBac for Oracle is due in March.
