Is there any suitable documentation around which could give in laymans terms the differences between OC4J and OID.

http://tahiti.oracle.com contains the Oracle Online Doc. set; specifically the collection for 10gAS

They are different things to compare.
OID is a LDAP server and OC4J is your core runtime componet of your AS used to execute java code.
