Why are you trying to run it as 'root'? If it works as 'oracle' that should be enough. There are environemnt variables that exist under the 'oracle' user which 'root' does not see automatically. If you HAVE to run as 'root' then you have to add the 'oracle' directories to 'root's paths.

Please do not use IM speak It makes posts very hard to read.

I believe that the Oracle server should also be under Oracle and I thought that the Java would be available to all users.

Please look in the 'Application Server' forum for threads on Server installation.

Just login as root user and open .bash_profile and add the paths of Oracle software like

ORACLE_HOME=/<where oracle installed>
ORACLE_SID=database_sid
PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/opmn/bin:$ORACLE_HOME/dcm/bin

etc...
in the root's .bash_profile
But it is better that just oracle would be the owner of Oracle related file because root users can stop/start the services and delete the files.

U know my dear friend that there are two roles sysdba and sysoper that two roles can start and stop the database and sysdba can also create a new database.

About starting and stoping the Oracle Database I can understand ur requirement to give permissions to other users. Keep it in ur hand r give these roles to other users on whom u can trust. moslty Oracle user issues that commands to stop and start the database.
