When I tried to shut down the database:
I get the following
Database closed.
Database dismounted. and it hung there. I am not getting 'ORACLE instance shut down.'
----
Waiting for a solution.
Thanks

To check what is the state of the database, you can see the alert log...does it record recent a shutdown of the db? also you can connect as sys with sysdha privilages and try 'shutdown immediate' command and post the output here.

Hi,
shutdown inmmediate produced the following
Database closed.
Database dismounted. and it got hung there.
I suppose to get 'ORACLE instance shut down.'
Whereas
When I 'Startup Force', it start up the instatnce.
