what is tns error? [message #200202]

when i enter the username/password- system manager in oracle9i
SQL*plus it shows th following error

ERROR:
ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error

what should i do
plz help me

is your database open.
Is this the only database/instance on that machine?
else goto command prompt use SET ORACLE_SID=yoursid and start.
edit your sqlnet.ora and comment all entries and try again.

ORA-12560 TNS:protocol adapter error

Cause: A generic protocol adapter error occurred.

Action: Check addresses used for proper protocol specification. Before reporting this error, look at the error stack and check for lower level transport errors.For further details, turn on tracing and re-execute the operation. Turn off tracing when the operation is complete.

Hello Mahesh

Same error i m getting too.Though from same password & user login i run sql*plus but some times it show error some times
it work smooth. What is the reason behind it?
