Why do u need two oracle homes in your client machine.

One tnsnames.ora can help u connect several oracle servers provided u have proper tnsentry.

Do u find Oracle home selector under Oracle Installation Products....

Have u ever tried installating oracle server on that machine...

The best idea would be to remove all oracle installation from that client machine and just install Oracle client freshly on that machine.

Protocol adapter error normally i find occurs due to improper setting of Oracle_sid or problem with network adapter...

Then I would suggest you to look into the network configuration of that server.
