A client site has oracle 10g installed on a sparc 64bit solaris 10 platform. oracle is 10.1.0.5. The client has performance issues in that whenever a shutdown immediate is issued the system hangs. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could caused a system, this includes the OS to hang.
the only way to resolve the issue is to reboot the server.
regards
Alan.

Try shutdown abort. Then bring it back up and shutdown immediate. Is it running out of disk space for the .trc and alert files? How long are you waiting after issuing a shutdown immediate?
Is it trying to switch logs with no archive log space? Are the disk devices reporting problems?
Are there processes actively running? Which ones? Some times the sort area size or temp is really big and there are a lot of users on. This makes Oracle do a lot of work to kick them off.
Are there any locks or deadlocks during this time? Is this a new problem? If so, what has changed. Are there a lot of orphaned Oracle processes still on the O/S when you issue the shutdown? Do you have the trace file size parameter set to a resonable size in init.ora?
Is this an Oracle server only? Do you have other programs running that might leak memory or not want to shut down?
Is the size of uncommitted data really large when you issue you command?
