We've experienced a performance degradation in stored proc queries using the ODP with a .NET app. I wrote a small app to test this, and sure enough, systems with ODP 9.2.0.2 installed execute stored proc queries much faster than those with ODP 9.2.0.4 or any subsequent release of ODP, including 10.1 and 10.2.
To test this, I imaged a bare-bones WinXP Pro installation on a single PC with the .NET framework installed. This PC and image would host the client application in the test. For the database, a 9.2.0.1.0 database was installed and loaded on another machine. The database was completely isolated and dedicated to this test. No changes, no other users, nada.
ODP versions 9.2.0.2, 9.2.0.4, 9.2.0.7. 10.1.0.4, and 10.2.0.1 were tested separately. For each ODP version test, the client PC was reloaded with the common test image, and the ODP release to be tested against was installed. The .NET app was installed, executed, and stats gathered.
The result: Tests run using ODP 9.2.0.4 - 10.2.0.1 performed 300-400% slower than those using ODP 9.2.0.2.
I can find no reason for this sudden drastic performance decrease. Nor can I find a way to get the performance of ODP 9.2.0.4-based (or later releases) installations to equal that of 9.2.0.2.
Can anyone explain or have any ideas about what changed that would cause this? I've read the release and upgrade notes, and there are no clues. Any ideas or suggestions?
