Could any one tell me what is this Oracle_SID and why do we need it?

Did you try reading a book ???

from docs
ORACLE SID - This identifier is used to avoid confusion with other Oracle instances that you may create later and run concurrently on your system.

oracle_sid is nothing but the instance name.
Instance is that captured in the ram for database operation

One database can have more than one instance

and normally the instance name is the database name itself.
