when you run "recover database using backup controlfile", do you actually need an old copy of your controlfile?

Yes, if all copies of the current control file are lost or damaged, you must restore and mount a backup control file before you can perform recovery.

If you still have your current control file, you most definitely do not want to use the "using backup controlfile" option!

Best regards.

When you use "recover database using backup controlfile",
You will have to REMOVE or RENAME all old CONTROLFILES.
That is you do not need old copy of your controlfiles.
