Hi all,
I have a workstation(Windows Xp SP2) that gives me the following errors trying to
tnsping to our database server(w2k3 server with 10g):
C:\>tnsping orcl

A "ping 11.2.30.40" works fine.
I found out that "TNS-12538" is "no such protocol adapter" but I think that the protocol adapter is installed...
this is how we did the client(version 8.1.7) installation:
The client was installed once on an application server to a directory say "C:\OraApp\Orawin8".
Then on each of our workstations we temporarily mapped the local directory "C:\Temp" as a network drive say "X:\" and
we installed the oracle client on the workstation to directory "X:\Orawin8". After this we disconnect the "network drive" "X:\" and delete the directory "C:\Temp\Orawin8".
Last we map the application servers directory "C:\OraApp" as network drive "X:\".
This works fine for all of our like 30 workstations.
(One reason we did this is to have just one tnsnames.ora for all clients.)
Thats why i'm sure that:
- it's not a typo in tnsnames.ora
- the listener as well as the database are up and running
because all other workstations can properly connect to the database.
I also checked that the workstation user has the privilege to access all necessary files and directories and the Oracle registry entries on the workstation look OK to me as well...
Has anyone got an idea how to find out what's going wrong here?
Thanks
