Oracle recently bought InnoDB (part of the MySQL DB) and just released a freebie version of their database - Oracle XE (eXpress Edition).

XE is a free, downloadable version of the Oracle database server. It can only be used to manage up to 4 GB of user data on a single processor machine, with a maximum instance memory allocation of 1 GB. ISVs can embed XE in 3rd party products and redistribute it freely.

More info here - http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/xe/index.html

Best regards.

Frank

This is a 'must have' piece of software. It has HTML_DB built-in, including the demos.

XE is not based on InnoDB. Acquiring InnoDB is a related, but separate storyline.

Any recommendations on machine specs for XE? I've found that the regular server edition crushes anything with less than 1Gb mem making it useless on most home PCs.

Ross, in order to get it running correctly on Windows XP you need to install it as Administrator. Not a local administrator but the true built-in Administrator account. I've had some trouble with it the first time I installed the production version. The Beta didn't suffer from the problem. Another point of attention is the rename of htmldb to Application express. The start page of the database is no longer http://yourhost:yourport/htmldb but http://yourhost:yourport/apex

It runs on my 2 laptops without any problems, and one of them only has 512MB of RAM. It installs in 10 minutes.
One thing I modified was making the services manual. I don't want the db to start up automatically every time I boot.

I run a 3GHz P4 with 512Meg of memory.

I also have the database starting manually and it takes about 20 seconds to get the start-up to run. After that it takes a further 20-30 seconds to 'get going' once I sign on, after that the response times are EXTREMELY acceptable.

Hmmm. My 256Mb RAM 1.4GHz P3 word-processor at home may be the acid test. Besides which, if I install it, I'll no longer have that "I don't have Oracle here" excuse for not checking my syntax. Thinking music please.....

Thanks for the responses.

You never had: sign up for a free workspace at http://htmldb.oracle.com like I did. Now you have an Oracle available at all times (provided you have an internet connection) Wink.

Actually I already had one, but:
- I never connected the dots in my head that I could use it to test SQL for this forum at home.
- I actually like using the excuse (shhhh)

One additional 'limitation' that is not directly documented is that 10g xe is basically equivalent to a Standard Edition. So don't expect to get all functionnality for free (bitmap indexes, partitionning, ...)!
