hi i am using the RAC failover, i have 2 nodes emp1 and emp2

the connect time failover behaviour is working fine when i give this entry in tnsnames.ora file..

emp =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(LOAD_BALANCE=Off)
(FAILOVER=ON)
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp1) (PORT = 1512))
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp2) (PORT = 1511))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = emp)
(failover_mode = (backup = emp.world) (type = session) (method = preconnect))

)
(RETRIES=20)(DELAY=15)

)

emp.world =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(LOAD_BALANCE=Off)
(FAILOVER=ON)
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp1) (PORT = 1512))
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp2) (PORT = 1511))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = emp)
(failover_mode = (backup = emp) (type = session) (method = preconnect))

)
(RETRIES=20)(DELAY=15)

)

but if i add the instance_name entry in this tnsnames .ora then the connect time failover don't work.. can somebody please explain me why oracle is perform this behaviour..

the new file is looks like this

emp =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(LOAD_BALANCE=Off)
(FAILOVER=ON)
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp1) (PORT = 1512))
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp2) (PORT = 1511))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = emp)
(instance_name = emp1)
(failover_mode = (backup = emp.world) (type = session) (method = preconnect))

)
(RETRIES=20)(DELAY=15)

)

emp.world =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(LOAD_BALANCE=Off)
(FAILOVER=ON)
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp1) (PORT = 1512))
(ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY = SPEC_NET) (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST = emp2) (PORT = 1511))
)
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = emp)
(instance_name = emp2)
(failover_mode = (backup = emp) (type = session) (method = preconnect))

)
(RETRIES=20)(DELAY=15)

)
