it seems that instance never frees allocated
sort segment (even the restart does not help).
the problem is that in multi instance
scenario one instance allocates all the temp space ( or
a large amount of it ) and it stays allocated for ever.

Is it possible to limit the amount of temp space
a single instance can allocate ? how do you solve this
problem ?

Please post your Oracle version and OS versions.
This might be a bug.
Please crosscheck whether this concerned tablespace is been created with 'default' clause.
If so, please ***Test*** this in your ***test environment*** and let us know.
recreate the temp tablespace as a normal temporary tablespace ( without the default option).
try again.

thanks for the suggestion, it seems that the non-default temp works differently. we have found out that the default temp
works OK as well ( the instance is able to claim the needed space from the other instance when necessary )
