Tried to install oracle 10g on my windows 2000 server and failed
during the database creation.
I have the following server setup
- Windows 2000 Server (Standard) with SP4 as a stand alone server
- No other enterprise apps on the server
Logged in under Administrator account,
Started to install Oracle 10G by advance installation. I pretty
much used all the default settings as I went through the wizard.
I also chose the option of creating a starter database (general
purpose). Everything seemed fine until it got to the database
creation part (Database Configuration Assistant). An error
message popped up with the message of 'ORA-01031 Insufficient Priveledges'. So I clicked on ignore on all the following errors
and the database didn't get created or working at all. At first
I thought active directory is causing problems so I demoted my server but stilll......

After loosing 5 days of my life. I finally got everything going
properly. Why can't Oracle make things easier??? I will post all the steps necessary to make oracle 10g work in windows 2000 server stand including access from a client workstation via Oracle instant client. A lot of manual labour but, I was in tears at the moment when I finally managed to connect to oracle and created my first table locally on the server and from my workstation. I can almost write a book from this experience. G*DAMN Oracle.. Whats even more messed up is I am going to post a solution to my own problem.

If you encounter this problem another time,don't waste 5 days,just do this:
first: It is a totally unrelated error.Only on windows systems.Make sure that your logging account is in ORA_DBA group before starting DBCA or cancel DBCA and run it later manually.
second: Before starting DBCA,see if your OracleService<SID> is running? if no,so you are! start it.
third: If you encounter any problem again so delete oracle service using oradim utility and create a new one.This may solve the problem.

Yeah I pretty much did all that troubleshooting. The second day just went to chapters and grabbed a 10g dba handbook and it helped alot. Although I have to say there are some bad scripts in the book that totally threw me off course but it helped. Seems like there are too many different versions of installation solutions out on the net that are either not explained very well or just generally bad.

Hmm, I redo the install again in vmware. It is a cloned image from the server that I was having trouble with. However, this time the installation went smoothly under guidance of OUI. The only different is I chose advance installation and customized every time manually... (Advance install). Hmmm. I guess the bright side is that it is nice to known how to create a database manually, better to go through the hard way first
