Forms 6 <-> Oracle 10g a working combination ? [message #124460] Sat, 18 June 2005 14:54 Go to next message

For those experts this may be a silly question but I am serious !
I am trying to upgrade from Oracle 6 on HP-UX PA-RISC to Oracle 10g HP-UX Itanium... But I must continue using text-based forms because we have over 50 dummy terminals using forms 3.0.
The question is: If we buy a rx2620 Itanium server, install Oracle 10g, upgrade our forms from 3 to 6, will all this work ?
Thanks in advance.

Is HP-UX PA-RISC a 32-bit machine and HP-UX Itanium a 64-biut machine? (I don't do hardware.)

If they are, and you have 'C' code user exits you may have a problem. Our solution was to run the forms as 4.5 and 6 on the 32-bit box talking to Oracle 7 and use SQL*Net to communicate to the 9i/10g database on the 64-bit machine where the data resides.

If you don't have 'C' code user exits, I believe that Forms 6 will run on 64-bit hardware okay.

David,
That is a very good idea, at least to get things working quickly, without worrying about migration issues etc. As we will have both the old ( HP9000/855S ) and the new ( HP rx2620-2 ) systems available to us, we could run the DB on the new and run the forms/reports on the old... What would be nice is that if Forms 3, which we currently use, could talk to Oracle 10g, but I think that will not be possible because of the SQL*Net V1 and V2 issues ? Am I right in assuming that ?
What frightens me is attempting to install Forms 6 on a 16 year old system running HP-UX 7 and Oracle 6...
Thanks for the nice ideas and I look forward to hear more...
