I have installed Designer 6i, Forms/Reports 6i, and Oracle 8i.

I finally got the installation going smoothly, but now the designer can't connect to the database/repository. It says it can't resolve the connection string. I have set up net8 correctly I believe, and there is a listener there on TCP on the standard 1521 (or so) port. Can anybody help me here, I'm fresh out of ideas.

please chk the registry settings under local machine->software->oracle and check for the entry corresponding to TNS_ADMIN and update the path to reflect the path of your tnsnames.ora file...that may help.....

SOmeone on another forum suggested I run the Oracle Home Utility and check the TSN_ADMIN value. unfortunately i don't have this software. I have looked for the setting in my registry and it is not anywhere at all. :(
If the setting is missing, I must know exactly where to put it...

I set the appropriate environment variable in control panel, and can now connect... will I have to do this every time I reboot, or will the computer remember to keep this environemnt variable. if not, how can i make it automatic ?
thx

open the registry editor then traverse along the following path : my computer->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Oracle in this 'Oracle' folder, there will be many entries and the TNS_ADMIN must also be there. if it isnt, please create one and set the path as the path where your tnsnames.ora file is present.

once the entry is made....it will remain....it will not be deleted for every shut-down...so one will not have to repeat the process every time....i really don't know why this happens but it is associated most times with some problems encountered during installations.
Problems running DES_2000 role script (last issue i think) [message #104109 is a reply to message #104108] Fri, 30 July 2004 06:14 Go to previous messageGo to next message

One last question before everything is solved:

I'm trying to run the CKROROLE.SQL script to give my repositary admin account the DES_2000 role. (It resides in the REPADM60UTL) folder. The walkthrough I am using (http://www.bus.iastate.edu/mennecke/533/S01/oracledesignerhelp.htm) requires me to run this script, however it is bombing on the following line:

GRANT EXECUTE ON standard TO des2000_owner;

I'm not sure why, but "standard" isn't recognised. The script is a newer one than referenced in the walkthrough (REPADM20). When this issue is resolved my problems are going to be over.

can't wait

i have a feeling that its not standard but des2000_owner that is not being recognized as there needs to be a role by the name while the role specified earlier in the problem in des_2000

I fixed it - i had logged into SQL with the wrong username, that's all - pls see my new question on repositary installation hanging (someone who knows how to install oracle products could make a living out of that alone! :O )
