I am getting the error ORA-12571 (TNS Packet writer failure. The test did not succeed.)error on the clients.
Let give you a brief background of our systems so that it is easier for you to analyze what might have gone wrong.
1. We have 2 CPQ ML 530 servers. Each having the database of 2 different ERPs.
2. We have switches at different buidlings to connect our PCs to each other using CAT 5 cables. There is a FOC backbone between the buildings. There are 19 machines in our network of 4 buidlings- 9 (including the 2 servers), 6, 3, 1.
3. Out of the 17 workstations - 3 have Windows NT 4.0 SP5 as the Operating System and the rest have Windows 2000 Professional (no Service Packs installed). 3 workstations are Pentium III and IV respectively, rest are all Celeron, Compaq or HP make.
4. One server is running on SCO Unix 7.1.1. Business Edition and other has Windows NT Server 4.0 SP 5.
5. The Unix server has Oracle 8.1.5 and the NT server has Oracle 9.0.1.
6. I am installing the 8.1.5 client and Borland C++ on each of the workstations to run one ERP and I am also installing Developer 6i on the same machines for another ERP to run.
What happens is after I have installed Oracle and Borland on the machines and then I try to connect to the database to test connection.. it fails and gives ORA - 01041 Internal Error, hostdef extension doesn't exist. Alias: <hostname>
I have tried to use Net8Config Assistant to solve this problem but still it does not work.
Similarly, after I install Developer 6i and then try to connect to the server it does not connect. And I get ORA - 12571 error.
Please help.

Hello
I am getting this error when trying to configure the Net 8 easy config in Oracle.
I have tried uninstalling and installing ORACLE 3 times. Still the problem persists. I am working on windows 2000. Do let me know how to resolve this.
