I was able to install standard Oracle Client 8.1.6 on xp home edition, but only after following directions in
http://www.orafaq.net/msgboard/windows/messages/634.htm. There was an additional change needed during the
install. The change was correcting the path name for
the install source, a pretty straight-forward change.
Without the workaround, Oracle Installer simply quit while installing any Oracle product.
