I have a Sun E4500 server that has a total disk space of about 400 Gig (22 disks of 18 Gig each on A5200 storage). The server has 3 oracle 8.1.7.2 databases, with datafiles placed on 17 of the 22 disks. The server is running out of space and so we are planning to replace it with the newer Sunfire V880 and with the A3510 storage. I believe that this storage can accommodate larger-sized disks, like about 73 Gig or 140 Gig each.
What would be the likely impact of having fewer but larger disks in terms of physical location of datafiles? This would mean that some datafiles which were in different disks before would likely now be in the same disks. At first glance, I would think that this would impact performance negatively, but I heard that eventhough the disk spindle RPM is going to be the same for the A5200 as it is for the newer A3510, the hardware architecture is going to be much better.
Also, if I now have 8 - 466 MHz CPU's on the server, how many 900 MHz CPU's would I need to have at least the same level of performance? How would I go about calculating this number?

You are going to be fine !
The larger disks are going to perform much better(even if they are of the same RPM) and hence will negate any performance drop(if any) by consolidating . Just take care of the segment type separation . Hope you are going to use RAID 1+0.
In terms of pure MHZ, 8 * 466 = 3728 = 4.1 * 900 . You will be fine with 4 * 900Mhz cpus. The newer faster CPUs are going to outperform the older ones not just becos they are faster but the technology is much better.
BTW I believe the latest V880 comes with 1.2GHZ CPUs..
