Hello,

I would like to write a version detection script to
find out the Oracle versions installed on a lot of
UNIX systems.

How do I determine what versions of Oracle are installed
on a particular system (for this example, assume AIX).

I know that /etc/oraInst.loc exists, and points me to
another directory, but I would like some help to
determine a list of installed Oracle versions on an
AIX system and if there is a way to determine the
versions programmatically.

Thanks in advance.

SQL> select version from v$instance;

VERSION
-----------------
8.1.7.4.0

or at the command prompt do

% $ORACLE_HOME/bin/svrmgrl command=exit | grep "Release"

Oracle Server Manager Release 3.1.7.0.0 - Production
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.4.0 - 64bit Production
JServer Release 8.1.7.4.0 - 64bit Production

The 2nd entry is what you are interested in I beleive...or even better, use a different grep.

Good luck.

You could use the query below:

select * from v$versions;
