I found no documentation on the impact of renaming a server (HPUX 11.0 32 bit) that is running a 8.1.6 database. Unable to actually rename a server as a test. So to test, I ftped the files that made up the database (all dbf files + control files + init.ora) to a new box. It started OK, anyone have additional history/information on this subject.

there are several things to distinguish between first.
- SID
- DB name
- Global name

Changing the global name is easy and is mainly used to verify db_link names when global_names=true (generally required for replication).

See this link on changing the SID.

I don't wish to change the db_name, global_name, or sid. I know how to do that. The unix administrator wants to change the name of the unix server upon which the Oracle instance and database reside. My question is whether such a change will affect the existing database, I believe it will not but cannot test this easily.
