Does anyone have a recommendation for loading a system assigned (sequential) numeric key when inserting into an Oracle 9I table?  Can Oracle do this for us? -or-  do I need to keep track of the last used number, add one to it, and insert.

Yes.

Do it the right way and use an Oracle sequence.
