Hi Experts,

I'm not able to connect to my Oracle database! Getting the following error, while using TNSPING utility ...

bash-2.05$ tnsping bnsnqa04_ITL5146.world

What could be problem ? I have properly populated the tnsnames.ora file.  With the same tnsnames.ora file, on a different PC, I'm able to connect to the DB.

Thanks in Advance,

Mahesh,

Thanks for your reply. I have set ORACLE_HOME
and added to PATH. I have also made TNS_ADMIN
pointing to directory, where my tnsnames.ora
file is residing.

I would have to access multiple DBs from the
same Solaris box. Also, I have only the Oracle client
installed on my Solaris box. In that case, would setting ORACLE_SID to a particular be of any help ?

Once again thanks for your reply.

Diwali Greetings!

Thanks,

Shankar Lakkaraju

No.
ORACLE_SID is something to be set in SERVER side to access individiual the particular instance( without using a connect string).
for the client sites, You no need to set them.

Very bad idea, install it correctly, the program is not self-contain it requires libraries.
Also are you sure you have the exact same version number?

Michel

Did you try what has been posted above:
* ORACLE_HOME set?
* ORACLE_HOME and tnsping exact same version, this is not a copy of a tnsping from an other place?
Copy and paste the command and return you have like:
C:\>tnsping mikb2

TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 11.2.0.4.0 - Production on 21-JUIL.-2016 09:40:42

Copyright (c) 1997, 2013, Oracle. All rights reserved.

Used parameter files:
E:\oracle\ora11204\network\admin\sqlnet.ora

Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = ...
OK (80 msec)
You can also try, if you are on Windows, to ping using McTnsping which requires no Oracle client.

Which error? You just responded to a thread that was over 6 years old, and presented no diagnostics, no evidence from your own issue. You should start your own thread and present all the facts specific to your own issue.

"3512 not found" inevitably means that ORACLE_HOME was not properly set, so the process was unable to find the file that provides actual message text in the appropriate language.

Can you give the information that has been requested of you? Information specific to YOUR error and YOUR setup?
What OS is you Oracle client software installed on?
What is location of the file 'tnsnames.ora'?
What is the content of the file 'tnsnames.ora'?
What is the full, complete, and exact command that produces the error?
What is the full, complete, and exact error returned by that command?

Do not tell us your interpretation of the answers to the above questions. SHOW us the results by the use of copy and paste. And yes, you can copy text out of a Windows command prompt. That will be much easier to read here than a screen shot. Especially if you enclose it in the code tags.
