OK, I'm new to Oracle. The organization we support has both versino 8 and 9 DBs running.

I'm trying to get a handle on the different connection technologies/products that Oracle uses.

Can someone give me a quick two minute lesson on what SQL*Net, Net 8, ORACLE_HOME, etc. are and how they relate to one another?

I'm having trouble getting various tools (TOAD, SQL Plus and ErWin) to all connect, and I'm sure the problem is from conflicting connection technologies.
