Forgive me if this is too simple of a question:  I am an oracle newbie.  To do a cold backup on oracle 9i on a win2k box, do I have to do a netstop after I shutdown immediate the database.  Or Can I just shutdown the database, backup the database files.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

the windows service does not have to be stopped to take a backup. so you can just shutdown the database and take your backup.
