I am new to this and practicing Dataguard. I am unable to connect to standby(SALESPRDSBY ) to duplicate standby database. Using one computer(on this example).

Primary                                  Standby
User: Rock_it_pc1                        Rockpc1
DB_UNIQUE_NAME: SALESPRD                 SALESPRDSBY
Linux RHEL 8                             Linux RHEL8

tnsping from Primary to standby works.

I am stuck and need help. I have tried everything I can for two days and I need help. I have changed password on both databases in linux using orapw$ORACLE_SID

**Primary database is up and active.  Standby is in Nomount stage.

Few screen shots below.

This is exactly your problem: you do not have not have password file authentication working. You need to recreate the password file for the primary, copy it for the standby, and then show that you can connect (or not) through the tnsnames aliases. Please show all this, using copy/paste from SQL*Plus. Do not merely describe it Smile

Your password file has the instance name in upper case, that needs to be lower to match what you have in listener.ora. In fact, case sensitivity seems to be an issue all over the place, there may be a few more things that need to be fixed.

You have not used [code] tags as I asked to format your copy/pastes. Please do so in future.

I did change instance name in listener.ora from salesprd to SALESPRD. restarted OS, recreated password with orapwSALESPRD. same result.
*Note: I do not have a sqlnet.ora file in my $ORACLE_HOME/dbs folder. Can this inability to connect with password linked to this? Just checking since I read someone make mention of it without offering solution.

So you have not yet changed the name of the password file? It has to match the name of the instance. You need to be consistent with this. The instance name: the parameter instance_name in your spfile.

(ps - code tags! Yeah!!)

To repeat: you need to change the name of your password file. IT has to match the name of the instance. Do you actually know the name of your instance? You have not shown it so far.

I did change it to lowercase orapwsalesprd . when I do that and run sql>select username, sysdba from v$pwfile_users; it returns no row selected. When I go back and recreated in as orapwSALESPRD  it works fine. I believe the issue is not on the upper/lower case but somewhere else. I have struggled with this for now 8 days in a row. See below what you have requested.

SQL> select instance_name, host_name,instance_role, instance_mode, database_type , status from v$instance;

INSTANCE_N HOST_NAME  INSTANCE_R INSTANCE_MO DATABASE_TYPE   STATUS
---------- ---------- ---------- ----------- --------------- ------------
SALESPRD   localhost. PRIMARY_IN REGULAR     SINGLE	     OPEN

This is getting confusing! Earlier we had this,
Service "salesprd" has 1 instance(s).
Instance "salesprd", status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
but now we have
Service "SALESPRD" has 1 instance(s).
Instance "SALESPRD", status UNKNOWN, has 1 handler(s) for this service...

That is because I went into listener.ora/tnsnames.ora trying to put sid in upper case to match orapwSALESPRD or lower case to match orapwsalesprd   I now have it back to orapwSALESPRD
