hello,

i downloaded the v11g xe for testing purposes, however it will not log in to the new database upon loading the "start database", it brings up the small black screen and simply says C:\Windows\system32>

i am running windows 10 and downloaded the 64 bit version,

so please tell me how to launch the database on the initial msdos command screen.

thanks

i am runnng win10, with laptop that supports all the min requirements i reckon, 300+ gb hd free, 4gb ram and intel n3540 duo cpu's, compaq 15 notebook. this is an older laptop i am aware but is just for testing and training, but the pl/sql version is the version requested from the course i am doing.

under programs when i select the start database, it only brings up the command prompt, i was then thinking that the GUI is launched from the sqlplus cmd...so i am currently stuck.

further it would appear the "get started" link will not connect via mz browser also for address 127.0.0.1:8080/apex/f

i get msg in opera saying this site cannot be reached.

consider to obtain a working Oracle database via different route
First install Virtualbox
https://www.virtualbox.org/
Then load into preconfigured VM
https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/community/developer-vm/index.html

HTH & YMMV!

Can you confirm that you have installed XE correctly? According to the installation guide?

11gxe is suitable.
For novice, it can be a challenge to correctly install & get operational.
We only know what you post here.
If you diligently follow the XE Installation Guide you have a chance to get XE online.
If you just blindly start pointing & clicking, the result will be a long & arduous task to debug.

Can you post COPY & PASTE proof that Oracle XE database has been properly installed?

Can you post COPY & PASTE proof that Oracle XE database is online & operational?

COPY the results from OS commands below

lsnrctl status
lsnrctl service

PASTE the results from OS commands above back here.

Please do as Blackswan asked and use Cut & Paste your session for us to see. Attachments could contain a malicious payload so people don't like to click on them.

That looks fine (well, the look is fine now that gazzag has formatted it correctly) you should be able to connect with SQL Developer no problem. What happens hen you try?

Well, that was very nice of the guy on your course. Did he also tell you to install SQL Developer? You have to develop your problem solving skills, man! You said you wanted to run Sql Dev. SQL Dev is not installed on your PC. Now, what might the appropriate action be?

download the developer version...which i already thought i had as guy on course said to download 11g xe....

i figured out yesterday i had the wrong version possibly on my laptop, but had to wait until i got home after work to download and run as administrator, hoping that might give me some more options - but it did not...

so anywyay, i will have to wait until tonight after work again to download

why wait until after work you might ask if i need it for work...well i am not allowed to download third party software to my work pc for testing purposes!
and i have to download it all via hotpsot via phone if choose to do it during office hours, which would cost a fortune on mobile data or i wait until i get home and do it for free!

lovely story...

I think I understand. You have missed a fundamental point: Oracle is a client-server database. You need both an Oracle server (in your case, database XE edition) and an Oracle client (in your case, SQL Developer). One is useless without the other. If you google "client-server architecture" or similar you can do some some pre-requisite studying.

The command-line tool supplied with Oracle versions that you can use to interact with the database is called SQL*Plus. You will find the file "sqlplus.exe" in the %ORACLE_HOME%\bin directory but the installer would have added it to your PATH. You could do worse than start here.

So what background/training/experience DO you have? Any educational process, whether it be in a university classroom, an online course, or even asking for help on a forum such as this (and OTN, where you are also working this same issue, with a lot of the same participants) assumes a certain level of knowledge. It appears that people on this forum (and OTN) have assumed too much on your part, so perhaps you should reset our expectations by explaining your background and training, and why you think that is sufficient to prepare you for DBA level work. I will say that DBA is not an entry level position.
